Teen drowns in American Lake

Divers search for missing teen on American Lake.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue reported tonight that a 13-year-old boy is dead after drowning on American Lake at Harry Todd Park in Tillicum.

According to Captain Jenny Sharp, spokesperson for West Pierce, crews responded at approximately 4:45 this afternoon to reports of a possible drowning on American Lake.  Bystanders called 911 and told dispatchers a 13-year-old boy was seen jumping off of the dock into the designated swimming area, but hadn’t been seen coming to the surface.

Sharp said firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes to find lifeguards searching for the boy, but the water was too dark.  Divers went in the water and searched the area for more than 45 minutes.  The boy was found, and firefighters performed CPR him, but he unfortunately passed away in the medic unit.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue would like to remind all swimmers to please be safe in the water.  Know your limits, wear a life jacket, and never swim alone.
